SACRAMENTS

As a church, we observe two sacraments.

By the act of baptism, a person becomes a part of the visible church, for it is a sign and a seal of the covenant of grace for believers and their children. As a sign, it proclaims God’s forgiveness and our redemption in Jesus Christ. As a seal, God marks us as adopted children of our heavenly Father. It indicates our engrafting into Christ, our rebirth, the remission of sins, and our ability by the power of the Spirit to walk in newness of life.

The Lord’s Supper was instituted by Jesus on the night of His betrayal and is to be celebrated until the end of time as a remembrance of His sacrifice on the cross. It serves as a seal of the benefits of Calvary for believers, signifying their spiritual growth and fostering communion with Christ and one another.
The Lord’s Supper is not a re-offering of Christ or a new sacrifice. Instead, it commemorates His once-for-all offering, allowing believers to praise God for His completed work.  The elements, while referred to as the body and blood of Christ, remain bread and wine. Though set apart for sacred use, they do not possess any special quality. Christ is spiritually present in the sacrament and is recognized through the believer's faith.

A Sacrament Q&A session is held at all Goodwill locations on the third Sunday of each month, at 1PM in Montgomery and 12PM in Port Jervis and Beacon. If you are interested in being baptized or having your child baptized, you MUST first attend a Sacrament Q&A session.  On the other hand, the Communion Table is open to all who believe and you do NOT need to attend a Sacrament Q&A session to partake in Communion.

We welcome you to come to a Q&A session with your questions and take time to chat with one of our Pastors about the Sacraments at Goodwill Church.  We ask that, if possible, you please register to attend this class so we know how many people to expect.
